Ngozi Dozie
Ngozi Dozie is an experienced startup executive with over 20 years in the retail and financial services sector. He has co-founded or led over 10 companies in three African countries, and previously worked as a consultant and investment banker in the UK and the US. Ngozi co-founded Carbon, one of Africa’s leading digital banks, and is a Managing Partner in a family investment company focused on early-stage companies.
Carbon pioneered the consumer finance revolution in Nigeria with its app that provided unsecured loans in minutes via mobile phones in less than a minute using real-time scoring and machine-learning. At Carbon, Ngozi oversees Finance, Risk and Data Science and has helped Carbon raise over $25 million in international debt and equity since inception. A resilient leader, Ngozi has guided Carbon through 4 economic crises and has experience in high-pressure negotiations. Ngozi’s main focus now is leading the company’s drive to incorporate Artificial Intelligence as a key component of Carbon’s operating structure.
Ngozi's experience spans different cultures and sectors, including Agribusiness, Brokerage, Collections, Digital Banking, Quick Service Restaurants, and Retail, having set up offices for Carbon in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Kenya, and Ghana. He co-founded Nigeria's first distressed equity fund, KASSF, raising $20mm from the International Finance Corporation. Through Kaizen Venture Partners, Ngozi invested in special situations across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria & Rwanda. He has successfully negotiated two investment deals with global private equity firms and a sales agreement with a Nasdaq-listed counterparty, despite a complex and contentious environment.
Ngozi is a global citizen having lived and worked in Lagos, London, Paris, Palo Alto and New York. He has strong passionately held views on fintech, investing and entrepreneurship and writes frequently in his published newsletter on a wide variety of topics. Ngozi sits on the board of Sankore Asset Management, one of Nigeria’s leading wealth advisory firms and for six years was a Director and Chairman of the Technology Committee of BusinessDay, Nigeria’s premier business journal. Ngozi is passionate about the use of technology in solving fundamental problems and sits on the Advisory Board of DataScience Nigeria, a non-profit that aims to train 1 million Nigerians in Artificial Intelligence.
He holds a 1st Class Bachelor of Science degree from Imperial College, a Masters of Science in Computation from Oxford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He is a qualified accountant and a CFA charterholder. Ngozi is happily married to a beauty entrepreneur and together they have three increasingly boisterous sons. In his spare time he is a keen athlete and has competed several marathons and two Ironman 70.3 races.
